2016 Update
Friends of the Mathews Memorial Library
In January, 2016, three Ad Hoc Committees were established to create and to implement longer term strategies for the FOL.

  • The Diversity Committee has created a presentation on the mission and activities of the FOL which is being used today to increase awareness of the FOL and to broaden our membership to include younger members and people of all races.  Late summer saw the first presentation to the Queens Creek Association.  If you would like for the FOL to make a presentation to your organization, club, or church, please let us know.
  •  The Finance Committee's goal was to create a financial strategy to meet current and future needs.  With the board 's approval, an investment strategy was implemented which will enable the FOL to meet needs as they arise and to have time to implement changes if warranted.
  • The third Ad Hoc Committee has been involved in publicity and has successfully involved the FOL in new ventures. The gift of a book to each fourth grader going into the fifth grade at Thomas Hunter Middle School and the gift of books to the elementary school are results of this committee.

At Market Days, the FOL had a presence which resulted in seven new members.  If you became a member that day, you were eligible to participate in a drawing for a new Kindle.  Sue Sherrill was the lucky winner of the Kindle.

The week of October 17-21 was National Friends of the Library Week, and the FOL had a table near the circulation desk of the library each day from 11:30-1:30 to register new members and promote our activities.  All new members that week were eligible to participate in a drawing for a Kindle.

Many thanks to our Friends members and our community for responding so generously to our Annual Fundraising Letter in support of the library. Donations exceeded $8500 which will be used to renovate the restrooms in the John Warren Cooke Conference Center of the Library.
Our FOL officers for 2017 as selected by the FOL Board are:

  • President, Molly Broderson
  • Vice President, Mary Whitley
  • Treasurer, Hank Furniss
  • Secretary, Jan Towne

We invite you to attend our next General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, April 18 at 10:00 am in the John Warren Cooke Room of the Mathews Memorial Library to find out more about our organization and its activities.
